Object Description
Wood and cast lead printing block. The printing image is of a circular seal. The seal consists of four circular outlines, each outline getting smaller as they move towards the center of the seal. In between the first and second circles is a ring of Greek text that translates to: Phalanx of Greek Veterans of American. Between the second and third circles is the same text in English. Between the third and fourth circles is another ring of Greek text that is too small to be legible. The second, third, and fourth circles do not meet at the bottom of the seal as they are cut off by a block of text that reads: Central Phalanx Chicago, 1936. At the very center of the seal is an image of a crossed United States and Greek flag.
Origin
Donated by John Damianos. The printing block was used in a linotype printing machine. Linotype presses allowed for the casting of entire lines to be printed at a time. Linotype printing was eventually succeeded by lithograph printing and computer typesetting during the 1960's and 1970's. This printing block was used by the Chicago-based, The Greek Art Printing Company. This print image was used for the printing of membership cards for the Phalanx of Greek Veterans of America. The Phalanx of Greek Veterans of America was a veterans organization comprised of Greek-American immigrants who had served in the Greek military. The mission of the Phalanx was: " the continuation of our sacred struggles to save Greek Nationalism and preserve Greek ideals along-side the American ideals for the new generation which, in the main, composes the center of our mission." The organization was formed in Chicago on March 25, 1936.
