George Phillos' official membership card from the American Legion, Pulaski Post No. 86 in Chicago, Illinois. The card was issued on April 1, 1935. Like many Greek Americans, Phillos served in the United States military during World War I. In addition to lobbying on behalf of veterans interests, the American Legion served as a means for immigrants who had served in the military to further integrate themselves into American society, interacting with other veterans.

Plaque (2011.7.187)

This is a rectangular wooden plaque with a top of a candy box cover mounted on the front. The cover is a blueish hue because it was attached with a wood stain which changed its color. The top has a grid-like patterning in the background covering the whole thing. It also has a decorative, dark blue border made of squares, within other squares. Centered in the middle is written "Alex's Sweet Shop" in bold dark blue type, with "Homemade Candies and Delicious Ice Cream" printed slightly smaller in the same color and font directly below the first phrase. Along the bottom left corner, it reads,"Net weight two pounds," centered along the bottom is "Phone Berwyn 6782," and printed in the bottom right corner "6823 Roosvelt Rd Berwyn, ILL" is printed. The top iteslf has been ripped from the box so its edges are uneven. On the back, written in pen, centered horizantally is written "This is the top of the cover of candy boxes used by Alex's Sweet Shop on 6823 W. Roosevelt Rd Berwyn, ILL on the 1930's." Along the left edge of the wood "12-B" is written in pencil. There is no known meaning for the number. The wood is fairly clean, there are some green stains in various areas such as right below the main writing and in the right lower corner. Above the writing a circular metal hanger is attached with a bent nail to the center of the plaque. Along the top of the plaque there is a brass, circlular piece of metal attached which stands straight up into the air so the object can be hung.

Contract (2011.7.188)

This is the original lease for Alex's Candy Shop. The lease is framed in a dark-stained, wooden frame and is lined in an inner, red framing. The lease begins with "This Agreement," printed large, in bold, in the top left hand corner, with the rest of the lease a mixture of typed generic lease wording and written, specific information. Information on the Lease: Signed on May 1, 1906 between Joseph W. Filetz and John Rassogianis for the discussed property in Chicago, IL in Cook County. The lease exptends from May 1, 1906 to May 1, 1911 for the sum of $3,600 payable on the first of every month to the office of Joseph Filetz. At the bottom of the lease, in the right hand corner, both Joseph W. Filetz and John Rossogianis signed their name. On the back of the frame is a wire attached on both ends of the frame by two small rings, used for hanging purposes, in addition to a silver sticker in the bottom, right hand corner, that reads, "Carlson Paint & Art Stores Quality Printing."

Advertisement (2011.7.191)

This is an advertisement for the Two-in-One Ice Cream Freezer. The advertisement reads, "Make your own Ice Cream -- Earn the Manufacturer's Profit" printed largely at the top of the ad. Below it, on the left, in slightly smaller text, it reads, "A New Business Opportunity For Progressive Merchants Everywhere" and on the right, "Two-in-Onr Automatic Freezer Advantages." Numbers 1-10 then descend down the right side of the ad, in bold black type, with ten advantages of the freezer listed next to a corresponding number. In the middle of the advertisement there is a color picture of the Two-in-One , with "Two-in-One 5 Gallon Freezer and Horizontal Cabniet" printed underneath. In the bottom left-hand corner, there is a section boxed type for those interested in the freezer to fillout and mail to 6822 West Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, ILL.

This is a top of a candy box covering. The cover is blue with grid-like patterning in the background and a decorative, dark blue border made of squares, within other squares. It has "Alex's Sweet Shop" centered, in bold dark blue type, with "Homemade Candies and Delicious Ice Cream" printed slightly smaller in the same color and font below it. The sides of the paper are very frayed and look as though they may have been burned or ripped.

These are the negtives from a photograph of a seven group portrait. The photo strip contains two negatives and is permanently bent at the top. The negatives are contained in a small, white, wax envelope/sheath. The group consists of three children.

On the bottom of the label is small text and information about obtaining this pastry bag from Ateco. It reads "Double seaming makes them better than ordinary bags. Ask your supply house for genuine Ateco Pastry Bags."

This is one of Alex Rassogianis' business cards. His name is printed in black in the center of the card, with "St Louis Ice Cream Parlor" printed underneath it, and "Confectionary, Cigarettes, Cigars and Tobacco" printed under that. In the bottom left hand corner is the store's address, 2601 S. St. Louis Avenue, with "Chicago" printed in the bottom right hand corner. In the top left hand corner is "Phone Rockwell 3053" and in the top right hand corner, a small logo of some sort and the number 546.

Card, Business (2011.7.248)

This is one of Alex Rassogianis' business cards. His name is printed in black in the center of the card, with "St Louis Ice Cream Parlor" printed underneath it in bolder lettering. "Confectionary, Cigarettes, Cigars and Tobacco" printed under that, with a thick black line running above it. In the bottom left hand corner is the store's address, 2601 S. St. Louis Avenue, with "Chicago" printed in the bottom right hand corner. In the top right hand corner is "Phone Rockwell 3053" and in the top left hand corner is a small depiction of a bowl of various fruits. There is writing on the back of the business card, possibly written by Alex's girlfriend at the time.

Card, Admittance (2011.7.249)

This is a ticket stub for the Grand Charity Ball. The ticket is light blue. According to the print on the ticket, the ball was held on Wednesday, November 9, 1932 at the Medinah Athletic Club at 505 N. Michigan Avenue. The event was sponsored by The Young Ladies Hellenic Societies.

Booklet (2011.7.251)

This is a small informational booklet, entitled "History of Penicillin: The Wonder Drug," a small booklet commonly sold in the 1950s in stores such as Alex's Candy Shop. At the top of the front cover it says "The Latest Chicago Street Guide" with the title printed underneath it On the bottom of the cover is a small blurb about the booklet's contents, "Educational Information in Regard to Health Which Every Man and Woman Should Know." On the back cover is a 1950-1951 calendar. The first few pages of the booklet provide information on the history of Penicillin, when to use it, how it works and where to go to find it. There are a few illustrations and pictures. The middle section of the booklet is a street guide to the city of Chicago. The last section of of the booklet is about the dangers and health risks associated with masturbation and sexually transmitted diseases, followed by information about where you can go to get help and treatment for these issues.

Envelope (2011.7.252)

This is a tax bill envelope from Herman Krumdick, Town Collector from Berwyn, Illinois sent to Alex Rassogianis. There is a red, two cent postage stamp in the right corner. The time stamp is dated March 5, 1932, 6:30 PM. In bold, black lettering, in the center of the envelope is "Tax Bill. If this is not your bill please return to the Mail Man," with "Tax Bill" and "Mail Man" underlined. Above this is a translucent viewing window to see the envelope's contents. The envelope flap is torn about half way off. Inside the envelope is an additional envelope addressed to Alex Rassogianis at 6822 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, ILL time stamped on May 9, 1931 at 3:30 PM in Chicago. There is a red, two cent stamp in the top right hand corner. Inside this inner envelope are severel additional documents. There is a letter from the Association of Real Estate Taxpayers of Illinois dated April 24, 1931. The letter is accompanied by an official receipt acknowledging Mr. Rassogianis' membership and legal fees and his membership card. There is also a small lined peice of white paper with the number 4400 printed on it. Lastly, there are two yellow tax bills.

This is a small "little black book". The book is bound in a black leather, with "notebook" printed on the front. About half of the book's pages are written on, in pen and pencil. Entries vary in subject but include: peoples' addresses, payment records, price lists and other various lists.

The corners are reinforced with small metal edges. It is a two paged menu, printed on bright orange paper, under a protective plastic covering. There is a hole burned into the plastic covering right above the "Specials" section. The right page contains the "Frappe," "Beverages," and "Hot Drinks in Season" sections in addtion to a hand written specials section.

Notebook (2011.7.261)

This is a black notebook from the Allied Confectioner's Association from 1927, as indicated by the hand written title page. The notebook has alphabetized tabs and seems to have been used primarily as an address book. The right pages contain addresses, while the left pages contain a chart keeping record of something, per address, perhaps of a payment.

Book, Account (2011.7.262)

This is a book of check receipts from 1919/1920. The book is bound in a thick black cardboard material, with a red/brown binding. Almost every page is written on. Checks of particular interest: Check #200 was a check sent to the donor's father while he was away in Greece during WWI. It was writtten to Constan. J. Rassogianis on Sept. 29, 1919 for $15.00. Check #238 was a check sent to John's wife in Greece before she came to America. It was written to Paleteme Rassogianis on November 18, 1919 for $25.00. Check #255 was written on November 18, 1919 to a "F. Kvasnika," who may have been the owner of the St. Louis store property for the amount of $70.00.

Book, Account (2011.7.263)

This a single-entry ledger/cash book. The book is bound is a cloth covering. The front has a highly detailed, decorative border. Across the center, at a slight angle is printed "Single Entry Ledger." Above that, hand written in pencil, is 'Cash Book." The back of the book also has a detailed border. There are brown stains all over the front and back of the ledger. The first six pages of the ledger are organized by alphabetized sections. In the "F G H I" section is a hand written note, "Chi-Herald-American Page 53." In the "Q R S T" section is written "Chicago Tribune Page 50" and " Chicago Times Page 53." The first page after the alphabetized sections is numbered in the top right hand corner as Page 11. At the top of page 11 is written, in pencil, "Start Oct 15th $19.43" and "Oct 1943." Under this, on the lined page, are twenty separate money entries that occured between October 15th and December 6th. Each entry has a date, person or organization and monetary amount. Page 51 is titled "Chicago Trib. 1940" and has 21 individual entries written underneath it, ranging from $1.47 - $5.20. Page 53 is titled "Chi-Herald-American" and has 15 individual entries ranging from $2.00 - $2.40.

Invoice (2011.7.264b)

This is the reciept for the gold Elgin pocket watch, that belonged to either John or Alex Rassogianis. The reciept is dated January 12, 1914 from A. Klier Jeweler and Watch Maker, on 3609 W. 26th Street. There is a hand written description of the watch, including its 20 year guarantee. The watch cost $23.00. The reciept is folded in eighths, and torn in places.

Wax Paper Roll (2011.7.27)

A large roll of paper and the spindle upon which is rests. The paper is a light greenish color with a faint pattern. The spindle for the roll is polished wood and besides being slightly worn (from rolling in the metal dispenser) at its ends is in normal condition.

Wax Paper Roll (2011.7.36)

A large roll of paper. The paper is a Christmas-themed item covered in mistletoe and the words "Merry Christmas" and "New Year". Additionally, the roll has metal cups pressed into either end, presumably to be used as rolling points for when it is mounted and being used.

Box, Candy (2011.7.37)

A large, green candy box. This box is a Christmas item as it has a large red bow (to compliment it's green wrapping) adorned with a large, fake mistletoe wreathe. Inside the box is matching wax paper.

Box, Candy (2011.7.38)

A small, yellow candy box. This box is an Easter item as it has numerous images of rabbits and painted eggs across its surface.

Box, Candy (2011.7.39)

A small, pink candy box. This box is an Easter item as it has numerous images of Spring animals (and their offspring), flowers and painted eggs across its surface. There are pictures of lambs, bunnies, and children. There are also flowers. The color of the box are pink, white, purple, and green. The bottom of the box is a white color. On each short end of the box, there are marks on either side where the paper had to be cut to be folded.

There are some frills on the inside but the box does not come with any removable wax paper. The paper is white with red and silver snowflakes with silvery ribbons. This box is stored in a cardboard box. The bottom of the box is white. The side of the cardboard box says "No.X-16-1, Mfg. by Quincy Paper Box Co., Quincy, Ill."

Box, Candy (2011.7.41)

A large, Christmas-themed candy box. This one is in the shape of Santa Claus holding his bag of toys and a wreath of Mistletoe while standing on a rooftop. The bag has white boxes with red bowties, along with a green drum. The roof is covered in snow, and there are brick rectangles on either side. The figure of Santa is wearing a white belt with a green buckle. The back of the box is cut in the same shape. The box itself is red. It is stored in a cardboard box with red writing that says "XMas" as well as black writing that reads "One 1 lb. No. 802"

Box, Candy (2011.7.46)

A medium candy box. This item is a yellow, Easter-themed box covered with rabbits, lambs, chicks, and Easter eggs. Also, the phrase "Easter Greetings" is repeated various times across the box. There are green and purple flowers, as well as easter baskets with eggs in them.

Box, Candy (2011.7.47)

A medium candy box. This item is yellow and only has "Home Made Candies" written on its face (along with "One Pound Net Weight" in fine print at the bottom). Additionally there is some pinstriping around the words. The top of the box has a slight swirly designs. The bottom of the box is brown.

Menu, Restaurant (2012.7.5)

A menu from Gayety's Restuarant/Candy Store. The entire menu is green and the cover displays the name of the restaurant, two torches and a bowl of fruit. The entire menu consists of only two pages and the paper is sealed with plastic and a black, faux-leather border. Several of the items listed on the menu are handwritten in ink, otherwise the rest has been printed. See images for a more detailed look at the contents of the menu.

Program, Concert (2012.9.7)

A program pamphlet for Spiros Safrithis' performance at the Foresters Temple at 1016 N. Dearborn St. in 1937. The front page has time and location information as well as a photograph of the orchestra. Spiros Safrithis is seated first row, center. The donor's 2 aunts, Aremis Safrithis and Marian Safrithis are on the left and right (repectively) of Spiros. The rest of the orchestra fill out around them holding mandolins and guitars. The inside of the booklet contains the program information, including song titles, composers, and additional information on the orchestra. The reverse of the booklet contains a photograph and short biography of Spiros Safrithis. The booklet is in fair condition, with a large crease across the center horizontally.
