Object Description
Rectangular wood and cast lead printing block. The print image is of a Christian cross with the bottom arm elongated. There are three-point decorations at the end of each arm. Similar three-point decorations are situated in the crooks where each arm meets. Superimposed inside the arms of the cross is another cross with pointed arms. Inside that cross is another simple cross with equal-length arms.
Origin
Donated by John Damianos. The printing block was used in a linotype printing machine. Linotype presses allowed for the casting of entire lines to be printed at a time. Linotype printing was eventually succeeded by lithograph printing and computer typesetting during the 1960's and 1970's. This printing block was used by the Chicago-based, Greek Art Printing Company. The print block was used for the printing of membership applications for St. Demetrios Senior G.O.Y.A. Greek Orthodox Youth of America is the national youth ministry of the Greek Orthodox Church of America. G.O.Y.A. is for junior high and high school children and seeks to promote fellowship, service, social activity, and Greek Orthodoxy to Greek-American teenagers. St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1927 and is located at 2727 West Winona Street, Chicago, Illinois. The block was also used to print meal cards for the Names Day Dinner held for Bishop Timotheos of Rodostolon on January 22, 1974. January 22 is the Name Day for St. Timothy. Name Days are days that are celebrated on the feast day of the saint, of whom the person celebrating shares the same name or a variation of the same name, i.e. those named Timotheos celebrate on the feast day of Saint Timothy. Saint Timothy was the fellow traveller and disciple of Saint Paul. The image was also used in the printing of invitations to the baptism of Nikolaus Apostolopoulos. The baptism was held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The Church was initially located at the corner of 60th & Peoria in Chicago, but in the 1960's moved to 10301 South Kolmar Avenue, Oak Lawn, Illinois. The image is also used in the printing of sponsor pages for the Greek Orthodox Community of St. George in the Dinner-Dance programs of the Philanthropic Society "Neo Skopos."
